University of Kentucky commitment Vinny Zollo hit a layup with less than one second to go to lift the visiting Clark County Cardinals over Shelby County 61-59 Saturday.
The shot was pretty much the only highlight for Zollo, who finished the night with an unimpressive eight points and 10 rebounds. Robert Hatton, 21 points, and Robbie Stenzel, 18 points and nine rebounds, led the Cardinals.
Shelby County held a 34-21 lead at the half and stretched that lead to 16 points in the opening seconds of the third quarter, but that was the only bright spot in the second half for Shelby. Clark County outscored the Rockets 27-10 in the third to take a 48-44 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Rockets battled back to take a 59-56 lead on Boomer Beckley's layin with 1:20 to play. Clark County tied the game at 59 when Stenzel hit three free throws. The Rockets had a chance to take the final shot, but turned the ball over with 12.7 seconds left in the game, setting up Zollo's last second heroics.
Beckley led the Rockets with 15 points and Donovan Johnson had 13. Anthony Payton finished with a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
