A former Shelby County school bus driver is suing the school system for wrongful termination.

Karen Butts of Bagdad, filed suit against the Shelby County Public School system on April 30 - almost a year after her contract was not renewed.

According to the suit, Butts' termination came after her bus was involved in a one-vehicle accident in February of last year.

In the complaint, Butts defends her driving record and her response to the accident.

In the suit Butts also charges the school system with sexual discrimination in regard to which of its employees are reprimanded.

"There have been numerous blatant violations of the handing out of discipline as it relates to the inequities that are given to females versus males," the lawsuit said.

Butts' lawyer, Samuel Hayward, did not return phone calls.

School officials would not comment on the case and their lawyer did not return phone calls.

In the suit, Butt's lawyer asks for "judgment against the defendant for pain and suffering, loss of income, and any consequential damages."

A court date has not yet been set.
