Shelbyville professional golfer Brandon Brown fired an 8-under-par 63 Monday to qualify for this week’s Web.com Tour event.
Brown will play in the News Sentinel Open Presented by Pilot, which will run Thursday through Sunday at Fox Den Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn. This is the second straight year Brown has earned a last-minute qualifying spot in the tournament.
Brown and Ryan Allison, of Cookeville, Tenn., both shot 63 in the News Sentinel Open Qualifier at Willow Creek Golf Club to earn two of the six last-minute qualifier positions. Brown, who shot a 64 in the same qualifier last year, carded a 29-34 with a round that featured one eagle, seven birdies, nine pars and one bogey. He started slowly, but finished strong.
Beginning on No. 10 Brown was even through his first seven holes – after birdieing the par-5 10th but bogeying the par-3 14th – before shooting 8-under over the final 11 holes. Brown began his torrid stretch by closing out the back nine with consecutive birdies on the par-4 17th and the par-4 18th. He kept the birdie train rolling on the front nine as he birdied the par-4 first, the par-3 second and the par-4 third. Brown then reeled off four pars in a row before finishing with a bang, birdieing the par-4 eighth, then eagling the par-5 ninth.
This will be the second Web.com Tour event of the season for Brown, who regularly plays on the NGA Pro Tour. He earned an exemption into the Utah Championship presented by Zions Bank in mid-July through the NGA Tour. Brown barely missed the cut (by two shots) in that event, carding a 3-under 139 in the first two rounds at Willow Creek Country Club in Sandy, Utah.
Brown tied for 60th in this event last year, carding a 1-under 283 (69-67-72-75) and collecting $1,609.
Brown will tee off at 2:35 p.m. from No. 1 Thursday and at 9:30 a.m. from No. 10 Friday at Fox Den.
