Collins graduate Michael Brooks tied for the team lead with eight tackles as the Lindsey Wilson College football team outscored Belhaven (Miss.), 28-0, in the second half in its 49-15 victory Saturday in Jackson, Miss.
Brooks, a sophomore starting linebacker, had two solo stops and six assists to tie Corey Lillard for team-high as the then 20th-ranked, now 18th-ranked, Blue Raiders (6-2) bounced back from consecutive losses with a decisive victory.
Meanwhile junior quarterback Branden Cresap, a fellow Collins grad, completed 15 of 25 passes for 160 yards and two touchdowns, junior running back Edwin Thomas (a Shelby County alum) rushed for 15 yards, and Collins graduate Tavis Elzy, a sophomore wide receiver, had one catch for 23 yards.
Lindsey Wilson (1-2 in the Mid-South Conference) returns to conference action Saturday, when it plays at Union College in Barbourville at 1:30 p.m.
Cozzens finishes 7th
Lindsey Wilson freshman Maria Cozzens finished seventh overall Saturday, helping the Blue Raiders’ women’s cross-country team to a fourth-place finish, at the Midway College Invitational.
Cozzens covered the 5,000-meter course in 21 minutes, 14.40 seconds. Embra Hawkins won the meet, leading Brescia to the team title, in 20:36.72.
Cozzens and the Blue Raiders next compete in the Mid-South Conference Championships, which will be hosted by the University of Rio Grande (Ohio), on Nov. 9.
Axlines, UT-Martin win again
The University of Tennessee at Martin football team, which features Shelby County graduate Matthew Axline and Collins grad Ben Axline, blasted host Austin Peay, 38-14, for an Ohio Valley Conference victory Saturday in Clarksville, Tenn.
The Skyhawks (5-3, 3-2), who once again started Matthew Axline at left guard, rolled up 482 yards of total offense. Sophomore Ben Axline, a backup wide receiver, had two tackles for UT-Martin.
The Skyhawks next host Murray State on Saturday.
Robinson scores 1st goal
Sophomore forward Sarah Robinson, a Collins graduate, scored her first goal of the season for the St. Mary of the Woods soccer team in its 4-1 loss to Oakland City (Ind.) University on Oct. 22 in St. Mary-of-the-Woods, Ind.
The Pomeroys (4-8-1) closed out their regular season Tuesday night against Ohio Midwestern University.
Adams wins diving event
Shelby County graduate Travis Adams won the 1-meter diving competition in the Centre College men’s swimming team’s 141-77 victory over Berry College on Saturday in Danville.
Adams, a senior, amassed 186.52 points, 65.47 ahead of second-place.
Adams and Centre will be back in action Nov. 9 when it takes on Franklin (Ind.) College and Bellarmine University in a tri-meet in Louisville.
