Shelbyville professional golfer Brandon Brown has qualified to play in next week’s U.S. Open.
Brown finished second at a Sectional Qualifying event – one of 11 nationally – in Springfield, Ohio, on Monday to earn a spot in the 156-player field that will converge on Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa., July 13-16 in one of golf's four "majors."
Brown shot a 5-under-par 135 over 36 holes – he shot an even-par 70 in his first round and a 5-under 65 in his second – at Springfield Country Club to lock up the second of two qualifying positions for the Open. Fifty-seven golfers qualified at 11 sites nationally on Monday.
Brian Stuard of Jackson, Mich. earned the first qualifying position with his 129 (65-64) while Brown, the reigning NGA Tour Player of the Year, beat out four others by two strokes for the final spot.
Webb Simpson is the defending U.S. Open champion.
