The boys team took ninth place in the Class 3A State Cross Country Meet at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington Saturday afternoon.

Leader Stacey Eden said that would ease his personal disappointment in taking fourth place with a time of 16:14.59.

"I think they did a great job," he said. "We trained our butts off all season. It seems like we had pretty much the best race we've had all season."

Senior Will Thompson was second for Shelby County, placing 61st in a time of 17:42. Sophomore Thomas Smith was 101st. Eighth grader Justin Downs and freshman Devon Fielding kicked it in at the finish for 125th and 126th place, respectively.

"Our team looked really strong," boys coach Randy McDowell said. "When you have young runners running their bests at the state meet, that's really all you can ask for."

Caterina Karas led the Lady Rockets, placing fourth in a time of 19:08.92. The sophomore hung with the lead pack, paced by Sacred Heart's Emma Brink, through the first half of the 5K-race, then finished 23 seconds behind Brink.

Freshman Taylor Webb cracked the top 30, placing 29th in a time of 20:09.3. Junior Lindsey Miller sprinted past two runners in the final 20 yards to take 125th place in a time of 22:16.04.

"It was a nice day, by far the fastest they've run on this course," said girls' coach Brian Crumbo. "Strange things happen out here, so if you do as well as you're supposed to do or better, you're doing well."
