Fairdale, E-town are the latest victims

The Collins baseball team made it 18 and 19 in a row with a pair of victories on the road last weekend, topping Elizabethtown, 9-2, Friday and rallying to beat Fairdale, 10-7, Saturday.

Before achieving that 19-0 start to their season, though, the Titans had to score five runs in the top of the seventh to beat the Bulldogs (7-11).

Zac Wiley’s 2-run double was the go-ahead hit for Collins, which trailed, 3-0, after the first inning, 5-2 after the second and 6-2 after the fourth.

The Titans scored three runs in the fifth inning – on senior David Decker’s RBI single and Nate Clifton’s 2-run triple – to trim Fairdale’s lead to one run. The Bulldogs added a run to their lead in the sixth before Collins’ big comeback.

Decker and Logan Bailey began the seventh with back-to-back singles. They both scored when Clifton’s sacrifice was misplayed by the Bulldogs. Buddy Johnson, the Titans’ starting pitcher, then reached on a bunt single before Wiley drove home Clifton and him. Junior Mason Jeffries added a 1-out RBI single for insurance.

Jeffries led the Titans at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Clifton finished with four RBIs while Wiley tallied two.

Right-hander Austin Perry picked up the victory (his seventh) with 1 2/3 innings of relief. The University of Kentucky signee gave up one hit and walked one while striking out three.

Decker’s 2-run double and Bailey’s 2-RBI triple highlighted that inning. Decker finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Bailey went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Wiley and Perry added two hits apiece. Perry also had a pair of RBIs.

Wiley picked up his fifth victory on the mound. He gave up one earned run on three hits while walking two and striking out five.

Collins, which is ranked third in the Kentucky Prep Baseball Report Top 25 and seventh in the Kentucky High School Baseball Coaches Association poll, hosted Belfry on Tuesday night. The Titans play at Trinity (6-9 through Monday) at 7:30 tonight.
