Extra-inning rally overcome in opener

By Josh Cook

The Shelbyville American Legion Post 37 baseball team split a doubleheader at Ashland on Saturday.

Ashland Post 76 edged Post 37, 4-3, in 10 innings in the first game before Shelbyville rebounded with a 12-9 triumph over Ashland in five innings in the second game.

“We played pretty well,” said Shelbyville manager Jim Wiley, whose team is 5-5 this season. “But I’m still concerned about getting everybody there on the same day.”

After Post 37 tallied two runs in the top of the 10th, Ashland responded with a trio in the bottom of the inning to win the game.

Ashland’s Zach Hutchinson, who has signed with Campbellsville, outdueled three Shelbyville pitchers (Eddie Mathis, David Decker and Jake Eberling).

Post 37 took the early lead with a run in the top of the second. Mason Jeffries led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on a single by Mathis, a South Oldham senior-to-be.

Post 76 tied the score in the bottom of the fifth with an unearned run off Mathis, who gave up three hits while striking out four in six innings.

The game remained 1-all until the top of the 10th when recent Spencer County graduate Lance Shelton led off with a double. Paul Miller followed with a single, and Shelton scored on Logan Bailey’s sacrifice fly. Miller scored later to make it 3-1.

In the bottom of the inning, though, Ashland answered with three runs off Eberling.

Jeffries, Mathis and Nate Clifton had two hits apiece in Post 37’s 8-hit attack.

An 11-run third inning helped Post 37 rally from an early 6-0 deficit.

Post 76 plated a half-dozen runs in the bottom of the first before Shelbyville sent 15 batters to the plate in the third. The inning was highlighted by a pair of doubles – the first brought in one run and the second three – from Jeffries, who finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs.

Bailey added a trio of hits for Post 37, which totaled 15. Zac Wiley, Dan Sanders and Shelton added two apiece.

Decker, a recent Collins graduate, picked up the victory in relief of Sanders. He allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits while walking one in 1 2/3 innings. Wiley tossed the final 2 2/3 innings, yielding two runs (one earned) on three hits while walking three and striking out three.

Shelbyville next plays in the Polk Brooks Tournament at Paducah on Thursday through Sunday.

“It kind of let’s you know where you stand,” Wiley said. “The competition will be very strong, but that’s good.”

Post 37 plays a team from Charleston, Mo., at 8 p.m. CDT Thursday at St. Mary High School before taking on Mayfield at 8 p.m. Friday.
