Quilt show during Bagdad Day

A quilt show will be held in conjunction with Bagdad Day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the sanctuary of Bagdad Baptist Church. The show will include demonstrations throughout the day and an opportunity to quilt on a frame. To register a quilt, bring it to the church on Thursday or Friday between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. For more information, contact Phyllis Bailey at 502-640-6062.

 

Garden sculpture show at Yew Dell

Yew Dell Botanical Gardens opens the 7th Annual Garden Sculpture Show on May 16 with an opening reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Tickets for the reception are $25 for members and $35 for non-members. The exhibit, which opens to the public on May 17, will remain open through Aug. 3. The reception and show are sponsored by Commonwealth Bank and Trust. Collins presents ‘All Shook Up’

The Collins High School drama department will present All Shook Up! at 7:30 p.m. on May 16 and 23 and at 2:30 p.m. on May 17 and 24. The opening night show will also include dinner prepared by the Collins’ culinary arts program and additional entertainment by other students from the district. Artisan’s center calls for fall exhibit ‘Put a Lid on It’

The Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea invites Kentucky artisans to submit works for the exhibit “Put a Lid on It: Containers by Kentucky Artisans” to be held Sept. 13, 2014 through Feb. 28, 2015.

The center’s “Put a Lid on It” exhibit will showcase lidded containers created by Kentucky artisans working with their chosen materials, styles and forms. Lidded works can be either traditional renditions or creative new interpretations of the container.

Shelby Artists on Main workshops

Shelby Artists on Main, Inc. announced an Art Speaks! series of art workshops for adults and youth. Thanks to a grant from the Shelby County Community Foundation, Shelby Artists on Main, Inc. has awarded funding to six artists to conduct workshops:

  • Acrylic/collage Art – a workshop for adults, May 31, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at Shelby County Extension Office. Contact JoAnne Jackson at joannajksn@gmail.com to register.

St. James Art Festival poster contest

The St. James Art Festival will have a poster design competition for the 2014 show, which is scheduled for Oct. 3-5 in historic Old Louisville.

The deadline to enter is June 13, and the entry fee is $20. The winner will be selected by the June 30 by the show’s committee and will receive a $2,000 cash prize. All entries will be displayed on the show’s web site. Entries must be original designs.

Limited and open edition posters will be produced by the St. James Court Art Show, which will own the design and related artwork. A smaller version will be produced to use as promotion for the Art Show. The winning image will also be sold in shirt/sweatshirt format at the 2014 show.

Library story hours

Story hours at the Shelby County Public Library, 309 8th St., will be at 10 a.m. for 2-to-3-year-olds and 11 a.m. for 4-to-5-year-olds on Tuesdays; 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. for 2-to-5-year-olds on Wednesdays; 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. for “Baby Time,” birth to 2-year-olds, on Thursdays. State fair concerts set

Lady Antebellum with special guest Billy Currington will open the 2014 Kentucky State Fair Main Stage Concert Series on Aug. 14 as a part of their “Take Me Downtown Tour.” The next night, the “Soundtrack of Summer” Tour featuring rock bands Styx and Foreigner will rock in Freedom Hall.

Tickets will go on sale Monday, March 24 at 10 a.m. for both concerts. Tickets for Lady Antebellum with special guest Billy Currington are $45 and $55 and tickets for Styx and Foreigner are $40 and $50. All prices include Kentucky State Fair gate admission.
