Richard E. Breeding was headed to Mount Eden from Shelbyville with his two children when a truck went out of control in a curve and struck the Breeding's pickup. It was the understanding that he threw himself in front of the children to save them... Pat Tinsley, a 29-year-old mother of four was finally right where she belonged. At 16, she wanted to join the welding class at Shelby County Vocation School, but they stuck her in secretarial. Thirteen years after high school she made her way back into the class where she had been banned before to secure her future as a welder... Julie Via, 15, and Kevin Fitzpatrick were crowned queen and king at the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church's first annual Sweetheart Banquet... Former Cumberland College basketball player and coach J.B. Scearce were inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in Atlanta. Scearce was a native of Bagdad and played two years for Cumberland College from 1932-1934, while it was still a junior college... Harold Tingle was re-elected chairman of the advisory committee of First Kentucky Production Credit Association... Births: Joshua Andrew Popp, Shandra Marie Field...

Jimmy Baker of Pack 133, Centenary Methodist Church, had his car judged to be the best designed and best looking during the Dan Boone District Cub Scout Pinewood Derby... Laban Jackson was elected as one of seven directors for a three-year term on the board of directors of the Farm Credit Banks of Louisville... Charles Philip Black, a junior at Speed Scientific School, who is on co-op plan with Goodyear in Akron, Ohio, was chosen one of four out of 40 co-op students to get traveling assignments with all expenses paid... Miss Nancy Smith was selected fourth runner-up in the "Miss Belle of the Blue" pageant at Georgetown College...

Odell Tinsley and his wife, Martha, spent a few days with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Tinsley, before he left for Sydney, Australia where he was stationed for three years to help establish a rest and recreation center for the men in Vietnam. His wife would join him later...

A.R. Hardesty was elected president of the Shelby County Fish and Game Protective Association Inc. Other officers were Paul W. Long, vice president; William H. Hays, secretary and treasurer; directors were L.L. McBride, C.P. Hall, George Wells, Jesse Puckett, Everett Hall and Garnett Radcliffe... Murray P. Nicol, a man who had operated his own construction company in Mobile, Ala., before he was 21 years old, retired as president of the Struck Construction Company of Louisville. He was married to Miss Virginia Boyd of Shelbyville...

Alex B. Veech Jr. was one of 73 singers who made up the renowned University of Kentucky Glee Club... Archie Ware Jr. was a contestant for the open featherweight State Golden Gloves Championship. The results was a draw and Ware lost by the judges calling an extra round... Lt. Commander Fred S. and Mrs. Robertson announced the birth of a daughter, Patricia Allen... Other births: sons to Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Huff, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hardin, Mr. and Mrs. John Arvin Watts, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Cranmer; a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. T.B. 80 years ago, 1928

A.C. Long, president of the Shelby County Trust and Banking Company, was seriously injured when struck by a car in Bogalusa, Louisiana, where he was visiting his son... Fire destroyed the building and contents of the general stores of R.A. McDowell and Roger D. Sleadd at Simpsonville. The post office located in the McDowell storeroom was also included among the losses.

90 years ago, 1918

Mrs. Luther Hall, Shelby County School superintendent, furnished each of the 65 teachers of this county blanks to give to their pupils to distribute to every farmer to obtain an estimate of labor needed during the season... The coal situation in Shelbyville was much the same, but few cars being received. So short was the supply that sales were limited to 15 bushels to a customer... Dr. M.A. Purdy was elected president of the Kentucky Veterinary Medical Association at Frankfort.
